The role
The Regional Environmental and Social Safeguards Coordinator will support the practical application of WCS’s Environmental and Social Safeguarding Framework and related policies, providing guidance and support to country and site teams in Central Africa and Gulf of Guinea region.
What you'll do
- Provide support and guidance on the implementation of environmental and social safeguards procedures and initiatives
- Conduct or support environmental and social risk and impact assessments
- Support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of grievance redress mechanisms
- Support the country program and site teams to ensure all projects and programs align with WCS and donor environmental and social safeguards standards
- Lead on capacity building for staff and partners to build knowledge and skills on environmental and social safeguards
- Disseminate lessons learned and best practices from the safeguard’s implementation throughout the region and other regions or departments
What it takes
- Advanced degree in social science, law, human rights, environmental and social safeguards, international development, anthropology, or another relevant field
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience applying environmental and social safeguards in the conservation, development, or humanitarian sector
- Demonstrated experience translating safeguard policies and standards into practical measures at the project or field level
- Demonstrated experience working directly with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, or other affected rights-holders
- Strong knowledge of international human rights standards and the rights of Indigenous Peoples
- Experience assessing and addressing human rights and social risks associated with conservation activities
