The role

Pheasants Forever, Inc., and Quail Forever are hiring four Habitat Specialist crew members to work in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation. The team will perform varied field duties including prescribed burning, invasive species control, and native habitat establishment across Central Illinois. These are full-time, permanent positions that require field work, travel, and potential odd hours.

What you'll do

  • Implement habitat management on IDOT rights-of-way including burning and invasive species control.
  • Assist the crew lead in procuring supplies and maintaining equipment.
  • Support grant reporting duties for collaborating organizations.
  • Participate as active members of prescribed fire crews.
  • Accurately map, report, and document all habitat management activities.

What it takes

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, forestry, wildlife management, or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in habitat management or prescribed burning.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to pass an arduous pack test annually.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly.
  • Must be able to attain an Illinois Right-of-Way pesticide applicator license within 6 months.
