The role
The Great Basin Institute is recruiting a Seed Collection Crew Lead to conduct seed collection and ecological restoration activities on Department of Interior lands throughout Southern New Mexico. This position involves scouting and mapping plant populations, monitoring phenology, and following technical protocols for seed processing and herbarium voucher collection. The role requires significant field work, including navigating rugged terrain and operating 4WD vehicles in desert environments, as well as data management and field gear maintenance. This is a 14-week, full-time field-based opportunity starting July 27, 2026.
What you'll do
- Scout and identify native plant populations for collection.
- Map populations using ArcGIS Online, FieldMaps, and Survey 123.
- Monitor plant phenology to identify optimal collection times.
- Process, package, and ship seed and herbarium vouchers.
- Perform data entry and manage field gear inventory.
- Drive and maintain 4WD vehicles for project-related travel.
What it takes
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, ecology, or related field.
- Experience identifying plants using taxonomic keys.
- Proficiency with hand-held GPS and navigation tools.
- Experience using ArcGIS Pro or ESRI apps.
- Ability to work in harsh desert conditions and camp for up to 8 days.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
