The role

The Nature Conservancy is hiring a NC Mountains Freshwater Restoration Specialist to lead aquatic restoration projects in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. The role involves identifying and implementing stream and wetland restoration, overseeing construction, managing partner relationships, and supervising field technicians. This position is a three-year term role based in Asheville with hybrid work flexibility.

What you'll do

  • Implement stream and wetland restoration projects including dam removals and habitat improvements.
  • Supervise a team of field technicians in collaboration with an existing Specialist.
  • Coordinate with the US Forest Service and other partners on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.
  • Write watershed restoration action plans and oversee project construction and permitting.
  • Evaluate and prioritize potential projects in selected NC watersheds.

What it takes

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, freshwater ecology, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in natural resource management or freshwater ecology.
  • Demonstrated project management and construction oversight skills.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding, remote, and variable weather conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
