The role

The Syria International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) is seeking a Liaison Officer to serve as the in-country focal point in Damascus, Syria. The incumbent will foster effective working relations with Syrian authorities, UN counterparts, and civil society, while providing operational and logistical support to the mission. This temporary position requires expertise in political affairs and diplomacy to advise leadership on transitional justice and accountability processes. Note that the establishment of this role in Damascus is subject to host country approval.

What you'll do

  • Foster effective working relations with Syrian authorities, UN colleagues, and civil society.
  • Provide in-country operational and logistical support to the Mechanism’s missions and staff.
  • Draft talking points, speeches, and secretariat services for the Head of Entity.
  • Monitor and report on programme and project development in coordination with management.
  • Advise leadership on transitional justice and criminal accountability processes in Syria.

What it takes

  • Advanced university degree in social sciences, political science, international relations, or law.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, or programme management.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in field operations, political outreach, or facilitation.
  • Required fluency in English and Arabic (UN Level III).
  • Proven experience in the MENA region, with desirability for prior experience in Syria or conflict contexts.
