The role

The incumbent will serve as an expert in one or more areas of concentration, handling complex legal matters involving public international law and providing legal advice on diverse and complex substantive and procedural questions.

What you'll do

  • Serves as an expert in one or more areas of concentration and handles complex legal matters involving public international law.
  • Provides legal advice on diverse and complex substantive and procedural questions.
  • Performs extensive legal research and analysis, prepares legal opinions, studies, briefs, reports, and correspondence.
  • Reviews, advises on, drafts, and negotiates complex agreements and other legal documents.
  • Serves on various standing boards, committees, ad hoc working groups, and task forces as required.
  • Coordinates and directs teams of junior legal officers dealing with significant problems or mentors and supervises the work of junior legal officers.

What it takes

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in public international law.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in public international law, including legal analysis, research, and writing.
  • Experience in professional legal work relating to the preparation and negotiation of international agreements is desirable.
  • Experience in professional legal work relating to international law governing privileges and immunities of international organizations is desirable.
  • Experience in professional legal work relating to procedural and institutional issues within an international organization is desirable.
  • At least two years of professional experience working with the UN or a related intergovernmental organization is desirable.
