The role
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service at Joshua Tree National Park, is seeking an Invasive Plant Technician Lead to manage invasive plant inventory and control efforts. The role involves executing manual and chemical treatments, monitoring treatment effectiveness, and maintaining geodatabases to protect native desert ecosystems. Additionally, the lead will supervise volunteer groups and provide training on invasive species identification and best management practices.
What you'll do
- Apply herbicides to control invasive plants in accordance with federal and state regulations.
- Maintain and update a geodatabase of infestation locations and treatment effectiveness.
- Lead volunteer groups in monitoring and controlling invasive plant species.
- Train park staff and volunteers on invasive plant identification and best management practices.
- Assist with native plant restoration and off-highway vehicle damage reclamation.
What it takes
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in weed science, plant science, botany, or related field.
- Experience in safe herbicide application and preparing pesticide use records.
- Current California Qualified Applicator Certificate or ability to obtain within three months.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and Field Maps.
- Ability to hike up to 15 miles carrying 25-40 pounds in variable desert conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
