The role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking an International Expert on Plastic Pollution and Circular Economy to assess Bahrain's single-use plastics policy framework. The expert will provide technical, analytical, drafting, and advisory services to develop evidence-based policy recommendations and a practical implementation roadmap for the country's transition toward a circular economy. This 9-month part-time consultancy focuses on identifying gaps in current policies and developing strategies to reduce plastic waste.

What you'll do

• Conduct comprehensive review of current status of single-use plastics in Bahrain
• Assess existing policy, legal, and institutional framework
• Perform international and regional benchmarking against GCC/Arab region practices
• Develop evidence-based policy recommendations and implementation roadmap
• Engage with government institutions, private sector, and civil society for consultation
• Prepare technical reports, presentations, and briefing materials

What it takes

• Advanced university degree (Master's required) in relevant environmental fields
• At least 10 years of professional experience in waste management or circular economy
• Demonstrated experience in developing environmental policies and regulatory frameworks
• Experience in stakeholder consultation and facilitation
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Experience in GCC countries or the Arab system is highly desirable
