The role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking an International Consultant to assess the Mozambican Armed Forces' institutional framework compliance with international human rights standards. The role involves developing standard operating procedures, organizing a consultation workshop in Maputo, and collaborating with various OHCHR offices. The consultant will work primarily from home but must be able to engage with local partners.

What you'll do

  • Support OHCHR Mozambique to assess the Mozambican Armed Forces’ institutional framework compliance with international human rights standards
  • Develop a standard operating procedure on a human rights thematic area in line with international standards (home-based)
  • Organize in collaboration with OHCHR and the Ministry of Defense of Mozambique (MoD) a consultation workshop on the SOP in-country (Maputo)
  • Integrate inputs and feedback from validation workshop into the Draft SOP
  • Liaise with relevant OHCHR staff in Mozambique, the Regional Office in Southern Africa, and OHCHR Headquarters
  • Ensure that a gender perspective is integrated in all areas of work

What it takes

  • Advanced degree in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field
  • Minimum of ten years of relevant work experience required
  • Knowledge of human rights issues related to the armed forces
  • Experience in SOPs development and implementation
  • Fluency in English (required)
  • Experience working with armed forces is desirable
