The role
The Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant will contribute to the promotion, protection, and realization of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly the Batwa community, in Burundi.
What you'll do
- Undertake research, advocacy, awareness-raising, monitoring, reporting, and other activities related to the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
- Support the ongoing work of the Senior Human Rights Adviser by engaging with Indigenous organizations and assisting them in capacity-building and awareness-raising activities.
- Provide substantive and technical support to promote the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human rights-related initiatives and programmes in Burundi.
- Support, initiate, and coordinate substantive and administrative arrangements for webinars, workshops, meetings, and other events related to Indigenous Peoples' rights.
- Assist in the development of communication and awareness-raising materials concerning Indigenous Peoples.
- Contribute to interim and final reports and provide advice on achievements, good practices, and relevant legal, political, and factual issues affecting Indigenous Peoples.
What it takes
- Completion of secondary education is required.
- A university degree in law, political science, international relations, human rights, or another relevant field would be an asset.
- Five (5) years of relevant professional experience in the field of Indigenous Peoples' rights, human rights, community development, or a related area is required.
- Experience in resource mobilization, communications, awareness-raising, and the development of capacity-building and training tools is highly desirable.
- Membership in the Batwa Indigenous community is highly desirable.
- Fluency in French and Kirundi, both oral and written, is required; working knowledge of English is desirable.
