The role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is seeking a Human Rights Officer to serve as the Chief of Investigations for the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan. Based in Juba, the incumbent will manage the day-to-day operations of the investigations team, oversee evidence gathering, and ensure high-quality reporting on human rights violations. This is a temporary assignment focused on investigative planning, victim protection, and the integration of gender perspectives into all analytical work.

What you'll do

  • Manage daily operations of the Commission’s investigations team.
  • Develop investigative plans and methodologies to collect and process data.
  • Oversee the conduct of interviews and evidence-gathering activities.
  • Coordinate the drafting and revision of internal analyses and final reports.
  • Ensure secure storage and handling of information and evidence.
  • Implement protection measures for victims and witnesses.

What it takes

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s) in Law, Political Science, or International Relations.
  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in human rights or international law.
  • At least two years of experience in investigating international human rights law violations.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in leading a team.
  • Fluency in English (UN Level III proficiency).
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage.
