The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is seeking a Chief Legal Officer to lead and manage a strategic litigation docket at the federal, state, and regional level. The role involves providing strategic thought partnership, managing a large legal team, and ensuring the highest quality legal representation in support of the organization’s mission.

What you'll do

  • Provide strategic thought partnership on legal objectives, strategies, and priorities
  • Participate in organization-wide strategic planning
  • Manage and support the litigation strategies across various practice groups
  • Ensure the Legal Department provides the highest quality legal representation
  • Recruit, hire, coach, develop, and mentor a team of highly skilled and collaborative litigation professionals
  • Work with the organization’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning team to assess outcomes and impact

  • JD from an accredited national law school
  • 15+ years of experience in civil rights litigation
  • Leadership experience in a non-profit legal organization
