The Land Trust Alliance is seeking a National Coordinating Attorney to lead Alliance Risk Management Services (ARMS) and oversee the Conservation Defense Initiative. This role involves managing all claims for Terrafirma Risk Retention Group, supervising outside counsel, and ensuring the sound financial and legal operation of conservation defense programs. The successful candidate will collaborate with team members and committees to provide expert risk management, legal education, and policy development to support land trusts nationwide.

What you'll do

  • Manage all claims for Terrafirma Risk Retention Group and supervise outside counsel.
  • Coordinate and staff the Claims Committee, including preparation of reports and delegated determinations.
  • Oversee the annual Terrafirma Policy form review and update process.
  • Collaborate with the Conservation Defense Director to manage the Conservation Defense Initiative (CDI).
  • Ensure sound financial, legal, and regulatory management for ARMS in partnership with the Operations Manager.

What it takes

  • Law degree and active membership in at least one state bar.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in conservation stewardship or conservation law.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with a land trust on stewardship and enforcement disputes.
  • Expert knowledge of land conservation law, nonprofit corporations, and federal tax law.
  • Proven experience in managing contractors, staff, and complex multi-stakeholder projects.
